The Glow-Up Nobody Talks About: A Full-Face Hair Check (And Why It Matters More As We Age)

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get enough attention in the beauty industry.

You exfoliate, moisturize, you use the best face masks. You're doing the work. But there's one simple thing a lot of us skip right over during our skincare moments in the mirror, and it has nothing to do with products.

It's a full-face hair check.

Now before you stop reading. This is not about telling anyone they need to remove their facial hair. Body hair is completely natural, and if you love yours, keep it. This talk is really just about awareness, because as we get older, our hormones shift quietly (or not so quietly) and our hair growth patterns shift with them.

Lip and chin hair especially tend to become more noticeable in our 30s, 40s, and beyond. It can happen so gradually that we genuinely don't see it.

And here's the thing: lighting lies to us. The mirror in your bathroom might not show you what the sunlight or someone sitting across from you sees.

A Quick Self-Check Ritual Worth Adding to Your Routine

Once a week, take a few seconds in a well-lit space, grab a hand mirror and check your:

  • Upper lip — especially the corners, where the hair gets the longest and darkest

  • Chin — gently run your fingers along it, because sometimes you'll feel it before you see it

  • Sides of the face — peach fuzz is normal, but it's worth being aware of

That's it. It's not about judgment. It's just about knowing what's going on with your skin and your body.

If You Decide You Want Help — Wax Ingredients Matter

For those of you who do want facial waxing, I'm very intentional about what I use at The Lounge. Facial skin is delicate — it's not the same as waxing your legs and it deserves a gentle formula.

I absolutely love the Starpil Starsoft hard wax. The ingredients are clean, the wax is smooth, and it's gentle enough for the sensitive skin around the lip and chin. Starsoft is free of coloring agents, formaldehyde, perfumes and parabens (and yes most waxes have these toxic ingredients). Starsoft is formulated with added tamanu oil — it's a powerhouse ingredient known for its soothing, healing and skin-conditioning properties, and it leaves skin calm and happy after a service.

I believe everyone deserves that kind of care, not just whatever works.

Let's Talk About Breakouts — Because Nobody Warns You

Facial waxing can cause breakouts, and that is completely normal. We need to talk more openly about this.

It doesn't happen to everyone, but it is a possibility — especially if you're new to waxing. What you might see are small white bumps or a little redness in the waxed area. Sometimes it's a histamine reaction, which is just your skin responding to the hair being removed. Other times it's simply your pores adjusting to the process. Either way, it's temporary and very manageable.

The best thing you can do? A mud mask.

I recommend applying a clay or mud mask day of your wax (after your appointment) and again in the days following your appointment. A good mud mask helps draw out impurities, calm inflammation, and keep your pores clear during that adjustment window. Think of it as giving your skin a little extra support right when it needs it. My favorite is The Problem Solver by May Lindstrom but any clean one will do!

The other thing worth knowing: the more you wax, the better your skin handles it. With consistent waxing, your hair follicles become finer and weaker over time, and your skin gets used to the process. Most clients find that any initial breakouts become less frequent — and eventually stop altogether. Your skin is just learning something new.

So if you try facial waxing for the first time and notice a few bumps, don't panic and don't give up. It's part of the process, and it gets easier every time.

The Bigger Picture

We think so much about our brows (rightfully so — they frame everything), but a brow wax, lamination or tint is really just one piece of the picture. Keeping an eye on the full face — lip, chin, sides of face, all of it, is the kind of self-care that keeps you feeling confident, not caught off guard.

And if you ever look in that bright window and think ugh, when did that happen? — no shame, no embarrassment. It happens to everyone. You just come see me, and we’ll take care of it together!

At The Lounge, lip, chin and sides of face waxing services are quick, gentle and done right.

Because you already care about how you look — let's make sure you're seeing the full picture.
