How to Make Granola That’s Healthy and Delicious
Let’s face it we’ve all fallen for the “granola is healthy” story and I’m not saying that it isn’t! But what if we could bring a little balance to this delicious breakfast staple?
Most store-bought options are filled with so many added sugars you lose a little of those health benefits. Oats provide a great source of carbs, protein and fiber. What a perfect way to start your day; feeding your body and your brain.
If you’re like me and you can’t find a store-bought option that meets your standards the answer is simple: make your own! Here is my go-to simple and easy homemade granola recipe:
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups rolled oats
¾ cup nuts (I prefer almonds and pecans)
2 tbsp hemp seeds
1 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 cup coconut oil
2-3 tbsp almond or peanut butter
2 caps full of vanilla
2-3 tbsp pure maple syrup
INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 200
Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix well
Place all wet ingredients into a small saucepan and heat on low stirring regularly to combine
Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix until evenly coated
Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper and pour oats onto baking sheet in an even layer
Bake for 2 hours
Remove and let cool completely before storing in a glass airtight container
TIPS & NOTES:
The options are endless with what you can add to your granola. I prefer to keep it simple, but some popular add-ins (post bake) are coconut flakes, chocolate chips and dried fruits.
Use any nuts you like best.
Use any nut butter if you’re not into almond or peanut.
Sub honey if you don’t have pure maple syrup.
Sub olive oil for coconut oil but note it will create more of a savory flavor.
Mix in fresh grated lemon or orange zest before baking for a fresh citrus take.
